Piet was fond of his cap, his pipe, and his wooden shoes. He and maria lived in Billings for a time, and the neighborhood children recalled the sound his wooden shoes made on the sidewalk after a rainstorm. piet brewed his own beer, and occasionally let his grandchildren sample his wares. His grandchildren also relate that he was a great storyteller. He had a wonderful sense of humor, which is evidently a genetic trait!
Piet passed away at age of 68 of pneumonia, after having an appendectomy. At the time of his death, he had 32 grandchildren. In 1999, he had 475
