The address of Johannes van der Sloot and his family, according to the Boxtel Register (1913-1922, Folio 235) was E 250. Before this, the family lived in St. Michielsgestel. This section shows a picture of the farmhouse “Hoog-Gimpt” of Johannes van der Sloot and Martina van Weert. Johannes owned a store at which not only the usual ware was sold, but also flour and spring oil. This homestead was also known as a quiet bar at which

many a farmhand would quench his thirst–usually on the tab. The farmhouse collapsed during a big storm at the time of or shortly after World War II. Johannes, like all van der Sloots, provided for his family in several ways. In addition to the store, he was a “henne -priester” (poulterer), merchant with a dogcart, and a farmer.

On the prayer card of Martina van Weert, mention is made that five of her eight children are still living. When she passes (4 January 1960) indeed five children are still alive, but to my knowledge out a total of seven, not eight. This does not necessarily mean that she did not have another child who perhaps died at an

early age.

It was very difficult to find a photograph of Johannes. Family members mentioned that he–with his dogcart–was once featured in a regional newspaper. However, the information was insufficient to make a successful search. Fortunately, a fourth-generation family member recognized him in a Golden Anniversary portrait of his Aunt Francijna in Haaren.

This section includes the above-mentioned picture of Johannes van der Sloot, one of his wife Martina van Weert, and one of his home “Hoog-Gimpt.” Also included in this section is a copy of a confirmation by the Registration Service that the family returned to live in Gemonde on 30 April 1913. It also shows a ledger from the Office of Land Registry which confirms that Johannes and Martina owned a house, farmyard, and farmland on Section B 1532. Prayer cards of both conclude the Johannes section.

PRAY FOR THE SOUL OF DECEASED

Johannes van der Sloot

husband of
Martina van Weert
born in Gemonde 22 September 1878 and
passed away at that place 1 January 1931

Take pity on me, Lord, for my life has succumbed in sorrow, and my years under the yoke.

Lord, be it with me according to thy will for it is better to die than to live while eternal peace is more desirable than a sustained illness.

Dear wife, be not mournful like those who have no hope.

My children, serve the Lord with sincerity and honor thy mother all the days of thy lives.

We beseech thee, oh merciful Jesus, to open the door of life for thy servant Joannes, that he may abide with thy saints in eternal joy.

Sweet heart of Jesus, be my love (300 days indulgence.)

R.I.P.

In rememberence of

MARTINA VAN WEERT

She was born to a family of 10 children:

the van Weert-van de Meerendonk family, on 11 June 1876.

She married in 1904 to Jan van der Sloot, who passed away in 1931.

This marriage produced eight children of which five are still living.

She passed away 4 January 1960 in Gemonde and was buried in that place 8 January 1960.

We were moved by the sudden death of this woman, who was at the store buying groceries when suddenly called to God with enough time for H. Absolve and H. Extreme Unction.

This woman had for the last six years enjoyed a quiet life at the boarding house of the sisters, well taken care of as she deserved after a busy and difficult life as the mother of a large family and having lived for over 20 years as a widow. Her children, all of whom have grown to be persons of good stature, appreciated her tender care with which she gave in behalf of her family and in behalf of her husband.

She was an example of religiousness and contentment of heart with which she was able to overcome the great difficulties and lead her family.

My dear children, without having said goodbye to you, God had opened the gates of heavens for me. This saddens us, but God has in his goodness, now given me all that is possible in happiness, in eternal possessions of God himself.

I want to continue in your memories hence you will follow me in the daily care of your families.

All live in righteousness and contentment.

May we reunite at God’s feet.

You honorable sisters, and all who have cared for me in the convent, my thanks for all you have done for me.

Th. van Kempen, Sexton–Gemonde.

In the Boxtel Registry (1901-1913 Folder 40, Folio 300) mention is made that Elisabeth van der Sloot and family lived in housing E 257. The photo of this house (included in this section) depicts two men shoeing horses. The house style was a hoekgevel boerderij (corner front farmhouse) which are found only in ‘s- Hertogenbosch and the surrounding area, and of which only a few are known. This house burned down and on the same location a new house was built from which Adrianus “Janus” van der Velden ran his bakery (photo also included.) The new house was a typical large langgevelwoning met zadelzak (long front home with saddle roof).

This section includes individual portraits of both Elisabeth and Adrianus, her birth certificate, a family portrait of taken around 1920, and a picture which was photographed during a procession in Gemonde in which Elisabeth (in the front) is clearly visible. Furthermore, both the old and new homes are pictured, followed by two photos taken during their Golden Anniversary in 1954, a snapshot of Elisabeth in 1957, a photo of the Elisabeth’s burial monument, and their prayer cards.

Remark: During the last phase of his life, Lambertus van der Sloot probably lived with Elisabeth and her family in their first home (which later burned down). The Boxtel Registry notes that he moved in with his daughter on 17 March 1911.
